David Davis is ‘still in running to lead Conservative Party’

Haltemprice and Howden MP David Davis remains in the running to become the next leader of the Conservative Party, a new poll suggests.

London Mayor Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Theresa May are joint top of a poll of party members as the favourite to succeed David Cameron, with 22 per cent of the vote.

They are followed by Education Secretary Michael Gove, who polled 13 per cent, and Foreign Secretary William Hague and Chancellor George Osborne, who both secured 11 per cent of the vote.

However, Mr Davis is still in with a shout by polling nine per cent of the vote, ahead of Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond, who polled five per cent, and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who polled three per cent.

In a survey of readers of the right-wing blog Conservative Home, Mr Davis fared even better, securing 15 per cent of the vote – putting him in third place behind Mr Johnson and Mrs May.

An insider told the Mail: “While much of the discussion has been around Boris and whether or not he will seek a return to the Commons before the next General Election, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Mr Davis would seek a second shot at the leadership.”

Mr Davis stood against Mr Cameron for the leadership of the party in 2005.
