David Davis comments on the suspension of cuts to legal aid

In light of the suspension of cuts to legal aid Rt Hon David Davis MP has said:

“I welcome the deferral of the proposed cuts to legal aid.

I have been supportive of a pause in proceedings since the reforms were first announced. Legal aid is so important to the operation of the judicial system that it is vital to get reform right first time. If the Government gets it wrong, British justice could be irretrievably damaged.

To cut costs without compromising standards of justice, the Government needs a slower, calmer and more subtle approach to legal aid reform. It is vital that a workable solution continues to be thrashed out; that a mixture of simple, short term changes and carefully considered, long-term reforms are discussed.”
